Synopsis

Excerpt

Bosphorus Bunks Hostel had a view of the water and a maze of narrow stairwells. Ava had downloaded a translation app before her trip and felt prepared. She read menus by scanning them, chatted with shopkeepers, and translated the hostel's chalkboard announcements with a quick tap. When the storm hit, she reached for her phone the same way she reached for her key card.

The power flickered at midnight. The emergency lights glowed red, casting long shadows on the walls. Guests shuffled out of their rooms, half asleep. Emre yelled in Turkish for everyone to take the main stairwell. Ava didn't understand. She scanned the sign by the side door and read the translation: "Safe Exit." She nodded and walked in that direction.

Yusuf had closed the stairwell weeks earlier for repairs. The warning sign in Turkish said, "Do not enter. Unsafe." The translation app, warped by a smudged sticker and a poor connection, turned it into reassurance. Ava pushed the door open and found a dark corridor. The air smelled like damp cement.

She used her phone light and stepped forward. The stairwell platform had been removed, replaced by temporary boards. The boards creaked under her weight. She paused, uncertain, and then the power surged, her phone screen dimming. She took another step and felt the board shift.

Zoe, following the crowd back toward the main stairs, glanced at Ava's retreating light and shouted for her to stop. The storm drowned her voice. Ava lifted her phone to scan the sign again, but the app lagged, flashing the same green "SAFE" badge as before. She trusted the screen more than the dark around her.

Emre later said he had meant to put bilingual tape over that sign weeks ago. He had a roll in his drawer, still sealed. The hostel depended on translation apps and good intentions, the same way the Lisbon hostel had depended on posted warnings about old fires. Words were supposed to guide, but here they misled, and the app's bright icon felt like a trap door with a smile.

Ava remembered the word "safe" and followed it like a rope.

She stepped forward anyway.

The boards creaked.

She fell through the gap and hit the landing below, the sound swallowed by the storm. Zoe heard the thud and ran to the door, but Emre held her back, shouting for everyone to stay put. The main stairwell was crowded and safe. The side door remained open, the red light pulsing like a warning she couldn't read.

When Yusuf arrived with a flashlight, he found Ava at the bottom, her phone cracked, the translation app still open. Emre called the ambulance, but the fall had been too far. The hostel's storm drill became a footnote in the police report.

In the morning, Emre replaced every sign with icons and multiple languages. He posted a note in the lobby: "Ask staff if unsure." The reviews mentioned the storm and a "tragic misunderstanding." @HostelReaper replied, "Words can kill when they lie."
