Excerpt

Trophy Wall Hostel was famous for its trophy wall: a massive display of donated helmets, surfboards, flags, and artifacts from guests. The wall took up an entire side of the lounge and was the main photo spot. Lena loved it. She had already taken three selfies under it and told her friends that Berlin was "the best hostel vibe" she'd ever had.

Hans, the owner, bragged about the wall as if it were a museum. He didn't mention that the mounting bolts were old or that the renovations had cut through a support beam. Mateusz knew. He had filed a maintenance request and then gotten busy. The hostel had a mixer that night, and no one wanted to close the lounge for repairs.

Zara set up a group shot, telling everyone to squeeze in. Lena volunteered to stand in the front, arms raised, pointing at the wall. The room was full of laughter and cheap sangria. Someone played music from a phone. The wall creaked, a low groan that blended with the bass.

The first sign was a shower of dust. People thought it was confetti. Then the flags shifted, the helmets rattled, and the wall began to lean. Lena looked up, smiled for the photo, and felt the air change. Hans shouted, "Back!" but the music was too loud. The wall fell in a slow, ugly arc.

It hit the floor with a crash that silenced the room. The surfboard clipped the edge of the bar. A metal trunk landed across Lena's legs. Her scream cut through the chatter. Zara dropped her phone and ran. Mateusz pushed debris aside with shaking hands. They lifted flags, helmets, and a suitcase, but the trunk was too heavy. Lena's breathing went shallow and fast.

Someone tried to prop the trunk with a chair, but the chair splintered. Hans shouted for a jack from the maintenance closet, the same closet where a stack of unused brackets sat in a box. Zara kept filming for a second too long and then stopped, the phone shaking in her hand. The room smelled of dust and spilled wine.

Guests lifted what they could, hands slipping on metal and fabric. The wall had been a shrine to memories; now it was just weight. Mateusz finally found the jack and slid it under the trunk, but it creaked and failed.

In the aftermath, the lounge looked like a salvage yard. The trophies were everywhere, their history scattered. Lena's eyes were open, fixed on the ceiling. The ambulance arrived and moved her carefully, but she did not survive the ride. Hans blamed a faulty bolt and offered refunds. The hostel's Instagram deleted the photo from the mixer but couldn't delete the memory.

In the review section, a guest wrote, "Do not stand under the trophy wall." @HostelReaper replied, "Decorations don't care who stands under them." The wall was rebuilt with lighter items. The helmet that had fallen on Lena's shoulder was hung back up, as if it had always been there.
