Excerpt

Lucid Loft had black-out curtains and a front desk that handed out sleep masks like souvenirs. Mia loved it. She had spent the last year chasing "most haunted" lists and "most cursed" hostel threads, always convinced she was above the fear. When she heard about a dorm in Manila where guests reported dreams so vivid they woke crying, she booked the top bunk without hesitation.

Her roommates were a mix of skeptics and believers. Diego joked about turning it into a challenge series. Ella asked if the hostel had any safety policies for nightmares, which made everyone laugh. Jiro, the receptionist, told them the dreams were a side effect of jet lag and the city's humidity. He didn't mention the line in the staff handbook about moving the mattress in bed six every week.

That night, Mia lay under the fan and set her phone to record. She wanted the audio of herself talking in her sleep, the proof of a dream so vivid it left a scar. The fan rattled. The hallway light slid under the door. She closed her eyes and whispered, "Show me."

The dream was a hallway that stretched and stretched, lined with doors labeled with her itinerary. One door said Bangkok, another said Lisbon, another said Kyoto. She opened the Kyoto door and stepped into room 237, the mirror catching her reflection with a delay that felt like a glitch. She closed it, tried another door, and found the same hallway again. The doors multiplied. The air grew colder. The dream was awake.

She felt a pressure in her chest and tried to scream, but her voice came out as a whisper. She recognized the sensation from a post about The Blob Below in New Orleans, the way the walls felt hungry. Here, the hallway felt hungry. It wanted her to pick the wrong door. It wanted her to stay.

Mia woke in the dream to a bed that was not hers. The sheets smelled damp. The ceiling fan was gone. She sat up and found the other beds filled with people whose faces she couldn't see. Each time she asked for help, they turned away. A notification blinked on her phone: "Some doors open inward." It was from @HostelReaper. The message made sense in the way nightmares always do.

In the real world, Ella woke to Mia's gasp. She saw Mia sitting upright, eyes open, unblinking. She whispered Mia's name. Mia did not answer. Her body was warm, her pulse faint. The fan above them hummed. In the hallway, Jiro walked by and glanced into the dorm, assuming it was just another night of travelers talking in their sleep.

Mia walked the dream hallway for hours. Every door led to another hallway. She started to see the other victims from the series, the ones who had walked into things they should have avoided. A boy with a key in his throat stood by a door marked Prague. A girl with a tattooed ankle stood by Lisbon. They did not speak. They pointed down the hall.

By morning, Mia's body was cold enough to make Ella scream. Jiro called for help, but the ambulance didn't arrive for twenty minutes because the street was blocked by a parade. The doctor said she was in a coma, eyes open, responsive to nothing. The hostel offered a refund, a coupon, and silence. In the reviews, someone wrote, "The dreams here are intense." @HostelReaper responded with a final note: "Some doors do not open twice."
