Synopsis

Luca Moretti is a budget foodie who believes the best meals come from stories, not menus. He convinces the Bear & Basil dorm to let him cook a "foraged feast" instead of ordering takeout.

He ignores Tessa's warning about wild mushrooms and jokes about the street food roulette from Book #45. When @HostelReaper leaves a comment on his ingredients photo saying, "If you don't know the forest, don't cook it," he thinks it's a fan account.

The dinner is a hit until it isn't. The night turns queasy, the morning turns fatal, and the hostel learns that the most dangerous kitchen is the one fueled by confidence.

Excerpt

The forest outside Ljubljana smelled like wet moss and old secrets. Luca had grown up in Milan, where mushrooms came in tidy packages, but that didn't stop him from striding between the trees as if he belonged there. He had a basket, a printed guide, and a conviction that a traveler should taste the land, not just photograph it. When he held up a cluster of pale caps to the sunlight, they looked innocent enough to be a promise.

Back at Bear & Basil, the common kitchen was already crowded. The fridge hummed, the stovetop was missing a knob, and a faded poster warned, "If you burn it, you buy it." Luca ignored the warning with a flourish. He chopped garlic, he sliced onions, he tossed the mushrooms in butter and called it "forest gold." Omar poured wine and narrated the process as if it were a cooking show. Tessa watched the mushrooms go into the pan and felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the open windows.

"Are you sure those are safe?" she asked.

"Totally," Luca said. "I had a guide. Plus, if street food can kill you in Marrakesh, at least this is local." He referenced the headline about the traveler who ate fried scorpion and didn't make it, and the dorm laughed because they all read the reviews for horror. He posted a photo of the sizzling pan with the caption, "Chef's Special, hostel edition." @HostelReaper commented from the shadows: "If you don't know the forest, don't cook it."

The meal tasted like smoke and triumph. Plates were scraped clean. Luca took a bow. Everyone told him he should open a pop-up. He went to sleep with his stomach warm and his ego warmer. The first cramps woke him before dawn. He curled against the tiled bathroom wall, sweating through his shirt, listening to the pipes gurgle.

By breakfast, he was pale. He insisted it was just a hangover. He drank water, then vomited it. Omar tried to google "foraged mushrooms food poisoning" on the hostel Wi-Fi, which was slow enough to feel like a judgment. Tessa offered to take Luca to the clinic, but he wanted to wait. He wanted to be tough. He wanted to make the free walking tour. He had already paid for it.

The day stretched. His hands shook. The pain moved from stomach to somewhere deeper, like a tide receding from the wrong shore. Vida, the hostel cook, finally returned and took one look at the leftover mushroom stems and went very quiet. She asked Luca where he got them, and when he said "the forest," she said nothing for a full ten seconds. Then she called an ambulance.

At the hospital, the words "liver failure" floated around his bed. He was tired enough to think they were talking about someone else. He asked if he could get a refund for the tour. Tessa sat with him anyway. She remembered reading about the girl who had died from an allergic reaction in Book #45 and thinking, "At least it was a market stall, not a forest." She wanted to tell Luca that risk came in different disguises, but his eyes were already heavy.

He died two days later with the taste of butter still in his mouth. The hostel posted a notice banning foraging without permission. Omar posted a tribute photo with a mushroom emoji, and someone replied, "too soon." @HostelReaper left the last comment: "Some recipes are curses."
