The kitchen at Namba Noodles smelled like chili oil and cheap soy sauce. Cole leaned over the counter, eyes watering, slapping the table as Kei counted down. The spice challenge was a hostel tradition, and Cole wanted the free beer more than he wanted to breathe.
Marin held her phone close, streaming the whole thing. On the kettle was a sticker: "@HostelReaper: Chew before you cheer." Cole grinned and said, "Noted." Then he slurped a wad of noodles so fast they never got a chance to be chewed.
The noodles hit his throat and stuck. Cole coughed once, twice, eyes wide. The room laughed, assuming it was part of the show. He tried to swallow, tried to breathe. The sound that came out was a dry, thin squeak.
Kei reached for him, but Cole stumbled backward, arms flailing. Marin kept filming, her chat full of laughing emojis. Cole collapsed against the counter, knocking over a pot of broth, and slid to the floor.
Someone finally shouted for help. The Heimlich was attempted, too late. The noodles stayed lodged, a cheap, sticky plug. By the time paramedics arrived, Cole was gone, the spice still burning in his mouth.
The hostel canceled the challenge for a week and added a sign to the kettle: "Chew before you cheer." Beneath it, someone wrote: "Death #43." The next night, another guest asked if the challenge was back.
