Death #40 of 101

Shower Showdown

"The last shower was a last straw."

📍 Table Bay Hostel, Cape Town, South Africa

Death Mechanism

A fight breaks out over the final hot shower. Zuri slips on the wet tile as she’s shoved, cracking her skull on a metal drain cover. The dorm blames the fall, but the shove is what made it fatal.

Synopsis

Zuri Maseko is a local guide staying at Table Bay Hostel between tours. The water heater has been broken for days, and the last hot shower of the night is a prize worth fighting for.

A rude tourist, Blake, cuts the line. Zuri confronts him, and the argument escalates. A @HostelReaper note above the showers reads "Scarcity makes enemies," but Zuri is too frustrated to heed it after the Lima initiation tragedy. The push happens fast, the tile is unforgiving.

The hostel calls it an accident and fixes the heater, but the grudge doesn't wash away.

Narrative Excerpt

The line for the showers in Table Bay snaked down the hallway like a slow fuse. The water heater had been limping all week, and the last hot slot was a prize. Zuri waited patiently, towel in hand, listening to a tourist complain about the smell of wet towels.

Blake cut the line, flipping his hair back like it was his personal queue. Zuri tapped his shoulder. "The line is here," she said. Blake rolled his eyes and shrugged. "I have a tour," he replied, stepping into the shower stall anyway.

Above the showers, a marker note read "@HostelReaper: Scarcity makes enemies." Zuri didn’t see it. She saw Blake’s smirk, felt the anger rise, and pushed the door open. The argument echoed off tile, sharp and fast, the kind that made people close their eyes and pretend not to hear.

Blake shoved her. It wasn’t hard, just enough to reclaim space. Zuri’s foot hit the wet tile, her balance went, and her head struck the metal drain cover with a sickening crack. The water kept running. The line outside went silent.

Nandi rushed in, slipping on the puddle, trying to lift Zuri’s head. Blake stepped back, white‑faced, insisting it was an accident. The paramedics said she never regained consciousness.

The hostel fixed the heater the next day and posted a sign about respecting lines. On the wall, beneath the Reaper note, someone added: "Death #40. Scarcity makes enemies." The queue moved on. The anger did not.
