Death #36 of 101

The Hunt

"The hike was a setup. The prize was survival."

📍 Summit Fang Hostel, Queenstown, New Zealand

Death Mechanism

A wealthy guest lures hikers onto a “survival challenge” and hunts them in the backcountry. Nate is tracked and shot with a crossbow after hours of pursuit. The hostel staff report him missing, unaware they fed him to a predator.

Synopsis

Nate Brooks is a thrill‑seeking backpacker who lives for extreme excursions. Summit Fang Hostel offers a private “off‑trail” hike led by a mysterious patron who calls it a game.

The game is real, but the rules are not. A @HostelReaper note on the tour clipboard reads "Predators book ahead," yet Nate is too excited to hesitate after hearing about the Krakow manager attack. He signs the waiver and walks into the wilderness.

The hunt begins at dusk, and Nate never makes it back to check‑out.

Narrative Excerpt

Queenstown sold danger like a postcard. Bungy jumps, jet boats, cliff swings—Nate wanted all of it. Summit Fang Hostel had a tour that wasn't on the brochure, a private hike led by a man who paid in cash and smiled like he knew secrets. Nate signed up without reading the fine print.

The clipboard by the desk had a note under the signup list: "@HostelReaper: Predators book ahead." Hana laughed it off and told Nate the guy was a VIP. After the Krakow manager attack, every hostel had a rumor. This one smelled like money.

Silas Mercer waited at the trailhead with a backpack too clean and boots too expensive. "It's a survival game," he said, handing Nate a map. "You get a head start. I get the thrill." Nate thought he was joking. The smile didn't reach Silas's eyes.

The trail wound into the hills. Nate jogged ahead, laughing, feeling alive. An hour later, he heard the first whistle—high, mechanical. The bolt hit a tree beside him. Silas wasn't kidding. The game had started.

Nate ran. He ducked behind boulders, slipped through brush, and tried to lose the sound of footsteps in the wind. The sun dropped low, the cold settled in. He heard the crossbow again, felt the bolt tear through his shoulder. He stumbled, still running, blood soaking his shirt.

The last shot hit him in the back, a clean strike that knocked him into the grass. He lay there, breath fogging, the sky above turning purple. Silas stood over him, calm, and said, "You were a good runner." Then he walked away, leaving Nate for the mountain.

Hana filed a missing person report the next morning. The search teams combed the trails. Silas checked out with a handshake and a tip that paid for the hostel's new coffee machine. The @HostelReaper account posted a photo of a trail marker: "Death #36. Predators book ahead." The hostel pulled the tour listing but kept taking VIP bookings.
