"Some shortcuts are just traps with better branding."
Luca Bianchi is a local volunteer at Tiber Stair Hostel who prides himself on "hacking" old systems. The building has a vintage dumbwaiter that hasn't been inspected in years, and Luca tells everyone it's fine.
A @HostelReaper stencil above the dumbwaiter reads "Not for humans," but Luca treats it like street art. He has heard about the Glasgow window fall and shrugs off the warning, confident he can outsmart an old lift.
The dumbwaiter snaps to life at the wrong moment, and the hostel gains another grim legend.

Tiber Stair Hostel was a maze of narrow halls and uneven steps, the kind of place that felt like Rome itself had leaned in to whisper. Luca loved it. He loved the way the old dumbwaiter rattled in the wall and the way tourists gaped when he opened its creaky wooden door. "Vintage efficiency," he called it, patting the brass handle.
The dumbwaiter was meant for trays and linens, but the hostel used it for luggage anyway. Luca had been using it for months without issue, and that was enough proof for him. Above the door, a black stencil read "@HostelReaper: Not for humans." He laughed and told Amira it was just a prank from a previous guest. "Everyone's obsessed with that account," she said, thinking about the Glasgow story she'd just read. Luca waved her concern away.
The day of the accident, the hostel was full. Marco barked for faster turnarounds, faster check-ins, faster everything. Luca decided to prove his point and show a group of guests how the dumbwaiter could carry a person. "Don't do this," Amira said, but Luca was already climbing in.
The shaft was narrow, the wooden platform slick. Luca crouched and pulled the door shut, grinning through the slats. The motor whined, the platform trembled. For a second, he started to rise, and the guests laughed. Then the platform jerked, the chain slipped, and the dumbwaiter stalled between floors with Luca wedged at a terrible angle.
Luca tried to push the door open, but the frame had warped. He yelled for Marco, for anyone. Amira ran to the breaker box, a dusty panel labeled in faded marker. The hostel's power flickered, then the dumbwaiter suddenly restarted, lurching upward as if it had remembered its job. The platform crushed Luca against the top frame with a sound no one wanted to hear.
Marco killed the power too late. Luca's body slumped, his head tilted to the side, his eyes still open. The guests spilled into the hallway, hands over mouths, whispers turning into phone calls. The hostel, already rattled by the spider bite news out of Perth, was now part of the growing list of avoidable deaths.
On the dumbwaiter door, Amira noticed the stencil again. Someone had added new words beneath it: "Death #18. Shortcuts become shafts." The hostel boarded the dumbwaiter up and wrote "Out of Order" in six languages. Luca's friends left flowers by the door. The building kept its whispers.
