Death #10 of 101

Midnight Swim

"The pool was closed. The night was open."

📍 Lagoon Loop Hostel, Canggu, Bali, Indonesia

Death Mechanism

An after-hours swim turns into a drowning when the pool drain malfunctions and the lone swimmer cramps in the dark. With no lifeguard, no lights, and no one hearing the splashes, the water takes its time.

Synopsis

Jesse Kline is a trust fund kid slumming it to prove a point. At Lagoon Loop Hostel, he bets his dorm mates he can swim laps at midnight and still make the 6 a.m. surf lesson. The pool gate is locked, but Jesse is good at climbing fences.

The hostel has a strict "no swimming after 10" rule for a reason. The pump is temperamental, the drain cover is loose, and the security guard sleeps through most of the night shift. A @HostelReaper note on the gate says "Dark water keeps receipts," but Jesse only sees a challenge.

He slips into the water anyway, and the pool becomes another quiet scene in the growing series of hostel deaths. By morning, the gate has a new sign, but the rule is already written in ink.

Narrative Excerpt

The night air in Canggu was warm enough to make the pool look like a mirror. Jesse watched the moon ripple across the water and felt invincible. The dorm had laughed when he climbed the fence, but they were filming anyway, whispering about how this clip would do numbers. Maya balanced her phone on a lounge chair and hit record.

The "Pool Closed" sign hung crooked on the gate. Under it, a marker scrawl read "@HostelReaper: Dark water keeps receipts." Jesse snorted and kicked off his sandals. "Relax," he said. "It's Bali. The rules are vibes." Adi, the night guard, was asleep in a plastic chair by the front desk, a soap opera rerun flickering on a muted screen.

Jesse dove in, the water swallowing him in a rush of coolness. He surfaced with a grin, splashing as he swam a fast lap. The pool lights were off, leaving the water black beyond the glow of a single courtyard bulb. The deep end was a suggestion, not a line. He loved it. He felt like he owned the night.

On his second lap, his calf seized. It was a sharp, sudden knot, a hook in the muscle. He slowed, trying to stretch it out in the water, but the cramp tightened. He reached for the pool edge and found only smooth tile. The darkness made the distance slippery, deceptive. He kicked and felt his foot graze the drain cover, the metal wobbling beneath him.

"You good?" Maya called, her phone still recording. Jesse tried to answer and got a mouthful of pool water. The pump hummed, then hiccuped, and the drain tugged at him in a gentle pull that quickly became a hungry one. He grabbed for the tile again and missed, his fingers scraping along the edge.

The water swallowed his shout. The courtyard bulb flickered, and for a second, his face broke the surface, eyes wide, a silent plea in the dark. Maya lowered the phone, thinking it was a joke, then raised it again when he didn't come up. She screamed his name. The dorm door opened. Someone ran for the front desk, but Adi didn't wake.

Jesse's last bubbles rose in a slow line, each one a quiet punctuation mark. By the time Adi stumbled out, rubbing his eyes, the pool was still again. The video went viral anyway, a grainy night shot with a caption that read "Midnight swim gone wrong." The top comment was a scythe icon: "Death #10. The water keeps receipts."

The hostel drained the pool the next day and found the loose cover floating like a blame note. They installed new locks on the gate and a brighter light over the courtyard. The night still looked beautiful. The rules still looked optional. The list kept growing.
